Mayor Dan Plato wishes all Hindu residents a Happy Diwali

Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is an ancient festival signifying the victory of hope over despair and the triumph of good over evil.

The message of hope is appropriate right now, and symbolises that we need to retain a positive mind-set as we have collectively worked hard to flatten the peak of COVID-19; choosing to be hopeful and uplifting each other is part of the resilience of Cape Town. We kindly ask that celebrations are done responsibly, with national lockdown regulations in mind.

During this challenging year we have seen Cape Town choose hope, kindness and generosity. Let us continue practicing these values as we tackle challenges that lie ahead.

Taking place tomorrow, the festival signifies the start of the Hindu New Year, which is a time to start afresh; with a positive outlook as we work towards rebuilding and economic recovery.

The symbolism of Diwali carries a message for us all: letting go of the past and welcoming peace and harmony.
With that renewal in mind, let us continue to be mindful to wear our masks and practice social distancing for the benefit of our loved ones.
